Adult chins: I free feed pellets (as many as they want).
Baby's: I free feed pellets.
DO NOT OVER FEED BABY, treats or grain supplement.
Alfalfa cubes or hay should be available at all times.

Chinchillas need High Fiber, low energy diet in order to prevent energetic problems. They must have a
high - quality hay given to them. 1 -2 tablespoons of High quality chinchilla pellets. Breeding chins will
require more then pet chins.

**Treat foods should be feed sparingly,
Avoid:
  • treats containing fat (example seeds and nuts)
  • high in starches and sugars (example raisins, my chins born here have never had a raisins)

Water:
I USE SPRING WATER FOR ALL MINE. Get your chin bottled spring water.
DO NOT USE TAP WATER (CITY WATER), EVEN IF YOU HAVE A FILTER DO NOT USE IT.  DO NOT
USE DISTILLED.

I also give a grain supplement, to all of my chins every night.
THIS REALLY IS A MUST!
I only give a pinch or two to each chin. Do not over feed the grain supplement! Too much of a good thing
is not good.

Treats: Shredded Wheat, Rose Hips, are both healthy treats. Only give a rose hip like once a week.
Shredded Wheat can be given daily.
Raisins are to high in sugar and are not necessary. I do not ever give them.
Nuts are too fatty. You should never feed nuts.
Feeding any type of treats from your finger will teach your chinchilla to associate your fingers and
nibbling. I suggest putting treats on the food dish.

Alfalfa Cubes: Available at all times, great fiber that a chinchilla needs.

Pumice Stones: Are a must and should always be available. A chinchillas teeth never stop growing their
entire life, so the stones to gnaw down their teeth.

Salt: Is a definite NO! They don't need it. And it causes them to become sterile. So I have been told.

Changing food: Needs to be done slowly, not over one night. Chinchillas have very sensitive digestive
systems.
1st week of changing over to a new feed 25% new feed, and 75% old feed.
2nd week of changing over to a new feed 50% new feed, and 50% old feed.
3rd week of changing over to a new feed 75% new feed, and 25% old feed.
4th week of changing over to a new feed 100% new. Gradual change is VERY! Important.
